Questions

Straight answers, not a brochure.

The things families actually ask before they send a child to an academy two thousand miles away. If your question is not here, send it, and if it is a good one it goes on this page for the next family.

01

Before you book

What age are the camp weeks for?

Twelve to sixteen, intermediate to advanced. We run younger and older groups separately through the year, so ask rather than assume.

How good does my child have to be?

Comfortable rallying with control and playing points. This is not a learn-to-play week. If you are not sure, send us a two-minute video and we will tell you.

Will they be with players at their level?

Groups are set after the first session, on what we see rather than on what the booking form said. If a player is in the wrong group on Monday they are moved by Tuesday.

Can my child come on their own?

Yes, from twelve. Most do.

How many players are in a week?

Deliberately small. We cap numbers so every group has a coach on the court for the whole session, and we would rather turn a booking away than go above it.

What if the week does not fill?

We tell you at least two weeks before, and you choose another week or take a full refund. We will never quietly run a week below the numbers it needs.

02

The week itself

How much tennis is there?

Two blocks a day, six days, around five to six hours on court and in the gym. Saturday morning is fitness on the beach and a swim.

Do they play matches?

Every day. We are an official UTR academy, so ranked matches can be arranged and recorded during the week if that is useful to them.

Do we get anything in writing?

A written report at the end of the week covering technical work, physical work and what to take home. It is the point of the week, not an extra.

Can their coach at home be involved?

Yes, and we prefer it. Every player gets a WhatsApp group and you can put their home coach in it. Sessions can be filmed and sent.

What if it rains?

The sun shows up almost every day of the year here, and rain costs us a training day perhaps twice a year. If one lands in your week, the session moves to the indoor gym and we do the physical work instead.

03

Staying and supervision

Who looks after them at night?

A member of TTA staff lives in the house and is there every night. Boys and girls are in separate houses. Staffing is set for each camp against the age and size of the group, and we will tell you what it is for your child's week.

Who do I contact during the week?

Tania, the academy coordinator. One person, day or night, rather than whoever happens to answer.

Can they share a room with a friend?

Yes, tell us when you book. Otherwise they share with someone of the same sex and a similar age. Up to four to a room in the residence, two in the player house, and you can pay for a twin or a room of their own.

What about phones?

They keep them. Not on court during a session, and not after lights out at half past ten, because the first session is at eight.

What happens if they get hurt?

Florencia, our physiotherapist, is on site through the week, so it is looked at within the hour. You hear from us the same day, whatever it is.

04

Getting here

Which airport?

Tenerife South, TFS, fifteen minutes away, with direct flights from most major European cities. Tenerife North works too and is about an hour.

Can they fly unaccompanied?

Yes. Book the airline's unaccompanied minor service and we will give you the receiving adult's name and document number. If you have booked the airline's chaperone service, their staff walk your child out to our named adult. If you have not, your child comes through to arrivals and we are there waiting.

Do we need to hire a car?

Not if your child is staying with us. If you are here for the week yourself, hire one. The island is worth seeing and everything is close.

How much are transfers?

Door to door, €25 each way from Tenerife South and €75 from the north, for any number of people travelling together.

Can we arrive on the Saturday?

Usually yes, for the cost of the extra night. Ask when you book and we will price it.

05

School and full time

Can they do school here?

Yes. Synergy Learning Centre is on the same site, teaching the British curriculum with a maximum of eight students to a teacher.

What happens when they travel to tournaments?

Everything is delivered through Google Classroom, so the work goes with them, and a class of eight means they are caught up individually when they get back.

How much school do they miss for tennis?

None. The classroom block takes the middle of the day, when it is too hot to be on court anyway. There is no homework.

Can we try it before committing to a year?

Yes, and we recommend it. Come for a camp or a training block first. If you then join full time, the full value of that week comes off your first payment.

06

Money

Is tax included?

Every price is quoted before IGIC and it is added on the invoice. IGIC runs at 7%, and 3% on some sport services, against 21% on the Spanish mainland.

Are there discounts?

10% off the training week for a second child from the same family, 5% off from three weeks and 10% from five. They do not stack, so we apply whichever is better for you.
