Why this week

Four reasons families book this one.

THE COACH

Carl Maes, with the academy behind him

An international coach educator and performance coach. Several of the juniors he has coached went on to play Grand Slam tennis. He is on court here in collaboration with Tenerife Tennis Academy, supported by the academy coaching team all week.

THE WEATHER

Outdoors, in December

Tenerife is one of the very few places in Europe where a full week of outdoor court work in winter is not a gamble. No indoor substitute, no sessions lost to rain.

THE WORK

Tennis and fitness, not tennis alone

A physical session is built into every day, in the gym or on the track, planned alongside the court work rather than bolted on at the end of it.

THE TIMING

It runs to the end of term

The week finishes on Friday 18 December, the last day of term across much of Europe, so the player is home for Christmas and goes into January in form rather than coming back off three weeks of nothing.

The shape of a day

Two sessions on court, fitness in between.

Theme of the week: finding the game style that actually fits the player. Carl uses functional analysis to work out what each player's best game style is, and the week is spent testing it, on court and in match play.

Breakfast

09:00 at the residence. Full board is included, so every meal of the day is covered.

Fitness

10:00. A dedicated physical session, in the gym or on the track, built into the week rather than bolted on.

Morning session

11:00 to 13:00. Two hours on court with Carl and the academy coaches, in the group you were placed in on arrival.

Lunch

13:30, and time off the legs before the afternoon.

Afternoon session

15:30. The second block on court, carrying on the theme of the day, with match play scheduled through the week.

Dinner

From 19:00 at the residence, then the evening free.

Matches, not just drills

Match play that counts towards your UTR.

Training weeks usually end without a single result to show for them. This one does not. Tenerife Tennis Academy is a verified UTR venue, so the matches played during the week are submitted as verified results and move the player's rating.

Everyone is placed across the courts on arrival, so the matches are against players at a genuinely similar level rather than whoever happens to be free.

How it works

  • Match play scheduled into the week, not squeezed in at the end
  • Results submitted as verified UTR
  • Opponents at a comparable standard, by design
  • Carl and the academy coaches watch and debrief the matches
  • A verified UTR record is what college coaches read when they recruit
New for this week

Filmed, then analysed the way it is done on tour.

Carl's theme for the week is working out the game style that actually fits each player. A view from the side of the court is not enough to settle that. So the week runs on footage and on numbers.

THE FOOTAGE

Track Tennis

A Track Tennis camera is going in on court at La Caleta, where this week trains. It records automatically, with nobody standing behind a tripod, and the footage goes to the player rather than sitting on a memory card.

  • Match play filmed through the week
  • Footage the player keeps and can send on
  • Installed and running before the week begins
THE ANALYSIS

Golden Set Analytics

Golden Set Analytics has been doing opponent scouting and performance analysis on the ATP and WTA tours since 2012, and says it works with around five players inside the world's top ten. The same methods are turned on the players here.

  • Patterns in the player's own game, not a general report
  • A written report, and a coach to go through it with you
  • Evidence behind the game style Carl identifies
  • An optional extra, on top of the camp price
The coach

Carl Maes

Thirty years at the top of world tennis. Carl coached Kim Clijsters, a Grand Slam winner and former world number one, and has worked with several other top one hundred players since.

He has captained at Fed Cup level and is International Director of Coaching at the PTR, so he spends much of the year teaching other coaches. For one week in December he is on court here instead, in collaboration with Tenerife Tennis Academy and with the academy coaching team working alongside him.

Payment is made in full at the time of booking, and that is what reserves and guarantees the place. Thirty per cent of it is the deposit, which is not refundable at any point. Rooms at the residence are booked and paid for on your behalf, so what is returned after that depends on how close to the week you cancel. The full terms are in the questions below. Extras are available at additional cost, including individual lessons, massage and the match analysis.

All prices are before IGIC. IGIC is the Canary Islands sales tax: 7%, and 3% on some sport services, against 21% on the Spanish mainland.

Before you ask

The questions parents send us.

LEVELIs my child strong enough?

The week is for players at UTR 8 and above. There is no upper limit, and stronger players are welcome. Everyone is grouped on arrival, so players train with others at their own standard rather than in one undifferentiated block.

FITNESSWhat is the physical side of the week?

A fitness session is built into every day at 10:00, before the first block on court. It runs in the gym or on the track and is planned alongside the tennis, so the court work and the physical work point the same way rather than competing with each other.

UNDER 18Who looks after younger players?

Players under eighteen are supervised by an adult at the residence. The courts are a four minute walk away and players make that walk themselves, so we meet them at the courts rather than collecting them from the door.

UTRDo the matches really count?

Yes. We are a verified UTR venue, so results from the week are submitted and affect the player's rating in the same way a tournament would. A week of training that also moves the rating is the point of running it this way.

FLIGHTSDo you book travel?

Flights are arranged by the family. We collect from Tenerife South airport and return you there at the end of the week, and both transfers are already in the price. Send us the flight details once the place is confirmed.

KITWhat should the player bring?

Essentials: rackets, court shoes for hard courts, training kit for two sessions a day, gym kit, a skipping rope, resistance bands for arms and for knees and ankles, swimming kit, sun cream and a hat. A tennis notepad is well worth bringing. December in the south of Tenerife is warm in the day and cooler in the evening, so pack a layer for after training.

CANCELLATIONWhat if we have to pull out?

The place is paid in full at the time of booking. Thirty per cent of that is the deposit and it is not refundable at any point. Because we book and pay for your room at the residence in advance, what comes back after that depends on when you cancel.

  • More than 30 days before arrival. Everything except the thirty per cent deposit is returned.
  • Between 30 and 15 days before arrival. Twenty five per cent of the price is returned.
  • 14 days or less before arrival. Nothing is returned.

Training only is different, because no room is held for you. The thirty per cent deposit is not refundable, and everything above it is returned whenever you cancel.

A booking made inside one of the windows above falls into that window straight away. If we cancel the week, you are refunded in full, deposit included. We strongly recommend travel insurance.

PARENTSCan we come too?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay at the residence and to watch the sessions. Tell us when you enquire and we will come back with the room and the price for the week.
