Primary Education KS2 (Ages 8-11)

The program

We offer a published programme for ages 8-11 that is broad and balanced covering the subjects from the national curriculum including English, Math, History, Geography, Science, Art, RE and Computer Skills.

Our unique classroom management encourages independent, well organised learning behaviours and a positive learning ethos. We aim to develop not only academic skills but also confidence and enthusiasm.

There is a strong focus on both English & Maths as these are seen as gateway subjects for much of our students’ future learning. The aim is that all students will have a secure understanding of both subjects.

Key Math Skills

  • Knowing all your times tables up to 12×12
  • Being able to add, subtract, divide & multiply numbers up to the thousands confidently.
  • Being able to read and write numbers up to 10,000,000.
  • Knowing all the sums for the numbers up to 10.
  • Knowing all the combinations of subtractions from 20 down.
  • Using mental maths strategies such as rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 & making good estimations

Practice makes perfect and maths needs to be repeated daily to build fluency.

For example just doing 10 sums a day will really help build that fluency and confidence with numbers.

Key English Skills

  • Reading a page of a story and being able to answer some questions about it.
  • Retelling a story in their own words without changing the overall meaning.
  • Writing about an event and describing what happened, what things looked like, how it made you feel.
  • Writing in a way that someone can understand your message clearly. This means having legible handwriting and using the right vocabulary.
For primary age children, reading every day is the single most important thing you can do to help your child. You can read to your child or they can read to you, either of these will help them develop their vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and general awareness of grammar. It doesn’t have to be for long, but it is really good to read different types of material so your child is exposed to the widest possible range of vocabulary.

Wider Curriculum

  • Science offers an opportunity to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for the living world.
  • History & Geography are taught using themes allowing students to consider a large range of information with in depth study of specific aspects.
  • Spanish or French is used to broaden students’ communicative ability and taught in small bite size chunks in an interactive way.
  • Art allows for the study of artists and techniques where students learn to use styles and ideas taken from these studies.
Assessment is formative based on daily assessment and short term targets as well as summative assessments to achieve a fully rounded picture of progress.
